Ruger Model 57 - The all-new Ruger-57 is a specialized rifle that uses 5.7×28mm ammunition. The 5.7×28mm (5.7) pistol cartridge developed by FN in the 1980s is a small-caliber, high-velocity handgun cartridge based on the 5.56×45mm SS109 NATO round. The ammo is fast, producing about 2,000 feet per second when leaving the 5-inch barrel. Ruger, in the United States, at the end of December 2019 introduced the Model 57, which uses the 5.7x28mm cartridge. I am fortunate to have one of the first Ruger-57 “hot-off-the-press” pistols to review and share with you.
Without a doubt in my mind, the 5.7x28mm is an excellent cartridge that offers many advantages. The 5.7 case and bullet have been made smaller to create what some say is a better performance of the 9x19mm. The round has a long, slim design with a bottleneck case and tapered bullet, as you can see in the photo above. It is almost 4 times more than the diameter. This compares to a standard 9mm round which is about 1.5 times longer. The 5.7×28mm round has its center of mass at the rear of the bullet the most. Therefore, when the 5.7 round hits the target, the bullet tends to collapse or move forward and yaw from side to side, creating a larger wound cavity. This helps transfer the bullet's energy to the target more efficiently, with less chance of penetrating the target into anything behind it. Thus, the wound cavity is larger; more power transmission; less penetration. More expansion. Some say the 5.7mm has only one-third the recoil of the 5.6mm NATO and two-thirds of the 9×19mm. The pressure level of the cartridge is low enough to keep the gun running and help reduce recoil. I had to shoot it myself to see how the recoil felt and compare it to the nice FN 5.7 pistol I reviewed here in December 2016.

Realize that there are many features, characteristics, pros and cons, and personal criteria that must be included and taken into account and that you make your own trade-offs based on your own priorities, preferences, needs, and usage.
I was worried about getting this pistol and purchased some Federal American Eagle 5.7x28mm 40-grain ammo, AE5728A. Ammo is available and you can shop for the best ammo prices. 5.7 ammo is offered by FN Herstal, Federal and Speer. I went through this show very quickly and had to pick up more to test and rate appropriately. I appreciate that Ruger donated some ammo. Shooting this gun was a lot of fun, and I was surprised at the accuracy, lack of muzzle rise, and very soft recoil for such a light gun. Luckily I fired about 400 rounds and couldn't put this good gun down. I usually shoot 500 rounds over two days to determine what I want to use the gun for and how to best use it. Below is a rating of each of the Ruger-57's 10 criteria for home defense and some shooting purposes. I also think this lightweight pistol with a diameter of 4.9 inches and a height of 5.6 inches could be a shotgun. For me, they aren't too heavy, too big, or cumbersome to carry around. I know some do. I like to put the gun through its paces and thoroughly check it for malfunctions, stops, accuracy and reliability. This Ruger-57 pistol is very nice. No crashes or downtime of any kind and I love the 20-round cups. It digests different types of ammunition without a problem. I was honestly amazed at how the recoil felt so low and there was almost no muzzle. I can honestly say the recoil is much less than 9mm and things like my .22 Mag round. It's buttery smooth and easy to handle when I'm riding the slide and it's very easy to attach and release the mag from the mag as well. And cups fall quickly and easily from the mag well. Very good performance. I was impressed with the short trigger pull, smooth, light and crisp, like a single-action revolver, even though it was a double action fired. I love the ergonomics and lines on this gun. Although it is a polymer, it feels solid in the hand, while being very light. It's very comfortable in the hand and the moderately aggressive grip feel is perfect for me. The grip is quite thin, but again more muscular to accommodate 20 rounds in the mag. For my medium sized hands, the grip is just right and comfortable for me. Again, I want to stress that the soft recoil is good and very low if there is a muzzle kick in this gun. Great features and performance to improve accuracy. Below I will get specifics and give you an idea of each criterion after some testing.

The Ruger-57's accuracy is excellent for me at ranges from 5 yards to 25 yards. This old programmer is happy, but the gun does most of the work. I did not have to adjust the rear sight for elevation or windage out of the box. Having no fine tuning whatsoever, my successes are amazing. 4.75#
