Remington Ammo Factory - Over the past few months we have been fortunate enough to tour all of Remington's major firearms manufacturing facilities and ended with this tour of the ammunition plant located in Lonoke, Ar. All Remington ammo is made at this factory.

The entire compound which includes native plants, new extension plants as well as the Remington Gun Club covers approximately 1200 acres of Arkansas woods and swamps. In fact, the area in the fenced area has enough deer and other game for company employees to hunt.

When this facility was built in 1969, and opened in 1970, it was so far from the city or the services that they actually had to build to be independent. It even has its own hospital inside the factory which is still operating today.

The white pipe in the photo is part of a 14 mile steam line. These two photos were taken from the top of the tower.

Currently there are 1257 employees with 1124 full time employees. This facility is located 20 miles from Little Rock, Ar. from I-40. The plant has 750,000 square feet under roof with the addition of a new building adding another 74,000 square feet. There are a total of 46 total structures on the property.

They generally run 3 shifts 5 days a week with 4 shifts 7 days a week 24/7 in some locations. Annual production is 2.6 billion ammunition and 100 million compounds. Nearly 1300 pieces of equipment are used in this high volume facility. The plant also uses 44 million lbs. of lead per year and 12 million pounds of copper per year! Amazingly the entire operation uses 400,000 gallons of water per day! When traveling around the area, you will notice a large number of steam lines. This line is 14 miles long.

Let's go to the main factory now and see the raw materials, machinery and the various stages of building rifles, pistols and shotgun ammo.

Remington Ammunition: Behind The Scenes

In this set of photos, we will see the raw lead received at the factory and then turned into coils.

After this roll is placed in other equipment, they are turned into a circle of uniform diameter which will then be cut to length as a lead core for the round that is made or as a wading blade.

Part 2 will cover the use of brass to make rifle and pistol jackets for various caliber bullets. Today will make 45 bullets akp, British .303 and .380 bullets. I will also cover the entire process when the components arrive to complete the full ammo. Look for the first part 2 next week.

In its 200+ years, Remington has created more unique cartridges than any other manufacturer in the world, and continues to produce original products: weapons and ammunition.

The company now known as Remington Arms began as two companies: E. Remington and Sons and the Union Metallic Cartridge Company. Remington itself was founded by Eliphalet Remington in 1816 based on his belief that he could make a better gun than what was available. It seems he was right, and the Remington company was the largest supplier of rifles to the US government during the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.

Meanwhile, the Union Metallic Cartridge Company, or UMC was created in 1867. The late 1800s was a period of rapid technological advancement in rifle cartridges and bullets. In a span of just 20 years, firearms went from loose powder and round balls to conical bullets in metal cases. The UMC is at the forefront of this development. In 1888, UMC's parent company purchased E. Remington and Sons, changing the company's name to Remington Arms. In 1912, UMC and Remington Arms merged to become Remington-UMC.

Under the Remington-UMC banner, both companies' headquarters were moved to Bridgeport, CT. Remington rifle production was kept in Ilion, NY, and continues to produce rifles to this day. The Bridgeport facility was used to produce ammunition, including ammunition for the United States military during World War I.

During World War I, Remington was one of the largest producers of arms and ammunition. They made everything from Enfields to Britain to Mosin-Nagants to Imperial Russia. The collapse of the Russian government due to the communist revolution put Remington in dire financial straits, so he decided to focus on the American consumer market. After World War I, Remington was bought by DuPont, who then bought the Peters Cartridge Company. The acquisition created the famous "R-P" headstamp on certain cartridges, which is still present on some rounds today.

In the build-up to World War II, Remington was contracted by the Army to operate several manufacturing facilities for ammunition, including the famous Lake City plant. Remington operated Lake City until 1985 releasing millions of rounds of ammunition for the military over 45 years. During World War II, Remington also produced the 1903A1 Springfield Rifle for the military.

Remington has always been a leader in the development of cartridges and bullets. Core-Lokt bullets were first developed in 1939 to provide controlled expansion and improved terminal performance on big game targets. The number of cartridges with "Remington" in the name is almost too much to list, and includes all-time greats such as .22-250 Remington, .35 Remington, and of course the most popular rifle cartridges in America, the . 223 Remington.

Arkansas Reloads As Ammo Making State

Remington remained strong through the 60s and 70s, and in 1986 closed its ammunition manufacturing facility in Connecticut. He didn't get out of the ammunition business, opening a new facility in Arkansas. This is done as a cost savings. By moving to the middle of the country, Remington was able to reduce shipping costs to deliver ammunition to stores and distributors.

The 21st century is another story. In 2007, Remington was purchased by Cerberus Capital, which became Liberty Group. Then in 2008, the US consumer ammunition market exploded after the election of President Barack Obama. Demand for 9mm, .223, and .22LR is through the roof. No one can follow. Remington expanded its centerfire production capacity as much as possible, but still could not fill the gap. In 2013, they began an expansion into their Arkansas ammunition facility to meet the continued demand for ammunition products.

In 2015 Freedom Group Holding Company, which owns Remington, DPMS, Bushmaster, and several other brands changed its name to Remington Outdoor Company.

Through all of this, the Remington brand of ammunition fell apart. Along with traditional Remington brand ammunition, they continue to produce budget conscious ammunition under the UMC brand. UMC-branded ammunition is available in common rifle and pistol calibers such as 9mm, .45 ACP, and .223.

I recently had the chance to find out for myself just how many are involved when I visited the "Big Green Mini-City" that is Remington's Lonoke, Arkansas ammunition facility. Whether it's a 9mm Doel round or a 12 gauge buckshot, if it says Remington on the package, it's from here. The facility, as well as the employees who work there, have experienced a lot in recent years, but they are back in 2021.

While the Remington brand has experienced a lot in recent years, Remington Ammunition is back and strong.

Remington Ammunition was purchased out of bankruptcy last fall. Since that time, the company has employed hundreds of workers, increased production significantly and continues to grow and expand. There is no secret from
