Remington 783 Stock - For years, people thought that a big price tag was inevitable for a high-quality rifle. In recent years, arms companies have proven that this is not always the case. The Remington Model 783 Bolt-Action Shotgun is one of the most affordable shotguns vying for the throne as the best affordable shotgun on the market. Let's break down the features.
It doesn't matter how good a gun is if it doesn't shoot straight. Fortunately, the Model 783 can take sharp pictures - amazing. Although the barrel has all kinds of tool marks, the gun consistently hits three-shot groups at 100 yards to the inch. That's impressive accuracy for a shotgun. Once properly sighted in, the Model 783 had no problem hitting targets out to 300 yards. The key to accuracy in a gun is rigidity - it eliminates the gun, bending or twisting when firing and the bullet flying straight. The minimal head clearance of the Model 783 barrel nut system and magnum profile barrel both help make the 783 a solid rifle that shoots accurately at long distances for a fraction of the cost of other rifles.

I had no mechanical problems when I tested the Model 783. Made entirely in the USA, the Remington 783 boasts a clean finish (especially for an inexpensive rifle). One version of the rifle is equipped with a nylon fiber reinforced synthetic stock, while the other (more expensive) version is equipped with a walnut stock. Walnut stock is more durable, but synthetic stock will do if needed. The depressor bolt turns tight, but I would expect the bolt to loosen some with use. Overall, the 783 demonstrated great reliability during testing, and I had no problems reported by the tester or other testers.
Remington 783 Synthetic Heavy Barrel
The Model 783's synthetic stock is the strongest among comparable guns. The plastic handle and Supercell recoil pad are soft (some have complained that it's too hard to pick). Sound and click safety has two positions (safe and fire). I found that the safety is not as comfortable as the pliers safety (the safety slides up and down instead of clicking back and forth). Bolt (spring loaded with one way release) comes with a flat grip which I find easy to use. The movement is smooth. Unfortunately, molded plastic sling studs look cheap (and break more easily than steel slings). The 783 model may not be as comfortable to handle as top-of-the-line shotguns, but the gun handles well and is (in my opinion) well worth the price.
Model 783 trigger stands out. The Model 783 has a trigger pull weight of 5.5 pounds, but with the adjustable CrossFire trigger system, that weight can be reduced to just 2.5 pounds (according to Remington). I can't get the trigger to be light (only 3 pounds, 12 ounces), but the ability to adjust the trigger is impressive for a gun of this price. The trigger itself is very breakable and feels light, rather than the heavy, rough feel of many cheap hunting or survival rifles. On the other hand, the trigger guard is plastic (not very strong) and oddly shaped (trapezoidal). Overall, Remington did a great job with this trigger.
The Model 783 comes with a detachable box magazine that holds four rounds. The magazine is part plastic, part steel, with the metal part being the most important part of the magazine. Loading the magazine is easy and I have no problem with the cartridges entering the chamber. The magazine quickly and naturally loads into the receiver. I have no problem with the magazine falling out or not sitting properly. In fact, magazine retention and ejection are better than comparable guns. 30-06 (probably the best hunting caliber), the Model 783 is a bolt-action rifle. This means that for the next bullet to chamber, the shooter must push the bolt on the side of the gun forward to fire again (instead of the gas that pushed the bullet before it entered the chamber). This tends to make the gun more accurate because there is less gas when moving the gun.
The Model 783 is 42 inches long and weighs 7 pounds, 10 oz. (empty with built in magnet). Adding the ring, rifle grip, loaded magazine, and sling, the rifle should have a field weight of 9 ¼ pounds. This length and weight is average for a shotgun.

The 783 model comes with a Supercell Recoil Pad. Remington claims it reduces felt recoil by 54 percent. I found the cushion enough to deflect the hard shock characteristic of the 30-06 shotgun, but others found it too stiff for comfort. Comfort pad recoil will depend on personal opinion. Overall, the gun is a smooth shooter for a 30-06. The weight of the weapon helps absorb some of the impact. Overall, the recoil control on the Model 738 is equal to or better than the competition.
Price is the biggest selling point of the Model 738. At just $399, you get a reliable rifle at an affordable price. These guns are often as accurate and reliable as more expensive guns. You may be wondering how Remington can keep costs down while making effective guns. Higher priced rifles generally have a better finish and more metal parts than the Model 738. However, these features do not affect the accuracy or reliability of the rifle, so Remington is able to make a functional rifle for less than most. Speaking of accuracy, the stock scope on the Model 738 is not the best scope. I recommend you replace it with the Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40 - a good choice for hunters.
The Remington Model 783 Bolt-Action Rifle is a great shotgun for people on a budget. Here are some of the distinguishing features:
If you're looking for a rifle that gets the job done without breaking the bank, look no further than the Remington Model 783.
